Most international visitors need a visa to enter Tanzania. The process is straightforward — here's the current overview (always verify with official sources before travel).
e-Visa (Recommended)
Apply online at the official Tanzania Immigration website before departure:
- Single-entry tourist visa: typically valid 90 days from issue
- Processing often takes a few business days
- Pay online and receive approval by email
- Present approval letter on arrival
Applying early reduces stress at the airport.
Visa on Arrival
Available at major entry points including Dar es Salaam, Kilimanjaro, and Zanzibar (ZNZ) airports for many nationalities. Bring:
- Passport valid at least 6 months
- Cash for visa fee (USD is commonly accepted)
- Return ticket and accommodation details
- Completed arrival forms (often distributed on the flight)
Queues can be longer during peak season — e-visa is faster.
East African Tourist Visa
If you're also visiting Kenya and Uganda, the East African Tourist Visa may cover multiple countries. Check eligibility and which borders accept it.
Zanzibar Entry
Zanzibar is part of Tanzania — one visa covers both mainland and the islands. You'll clear immigration at ZNZ or when connecting through Dar.
Yellow Fever
Yellow fever vaccination may be required if you're arriving from a country with risk of transmission. Carry your certificate.
